Mahon, locally known as Mao, is the lively capital of Menorca. Home to a bustling port set on an enormous natural harbour, surrounded by impressive buildings which reflect Mahon's long history as a working harbour. The island's largest and most popular meeting place, with locals and tourists alike, is the Placa Esplanada. Lined with cafés, restaurants and important monuments, it was once a ground for the military parade.

The city also has some great places where one can take a pleasant walk. Carrer Nou, a pedestrian street, is marked by numerous selling local crafts. Further down, along the shore of the port, which stretches for more than five kilometres, you will find plenty of restaurants, bars and terraces. In the surrounding area of the port, you can visit the distilleries of Majorcan gin (a drink flavoured with juniper cones) that follow the traditional English method of production.

A great way to sample the cuisine of Mahon is to try one of the many excellent tapas bars. This give you the chance to sample some local delicacies without having to order a particular dish as a full meal. It's a good way to experience the fabulous Spanish gastronomic delights on offer whilst on holiday. There are many fish and seafood restaurants along with restaurants serving a varied selection of local meats and international dishes. Although Menorca is the quietest of the Balearic islands, there are still plenty of places to go to enjoy the rest of the evening after dinner.
