Cala Pregonda is particularly beautiful, whilst Son Bou stretches for around 2.5km. It’s also easy to find space away from the crowds, and you can expect to enjoy beaches without having to fight for a spot on the sand.

The island is bursting with history. Maó’s harbour has been fought over again and again, and been home to numerous fleets. The French, British, Spanish, Romans and Berbers have all claimed it at one time or another, and the rest of the island with it. It was a superb place to station a fleet that kept it safe from any storms and was easily defendable, but also offered excellent access to the rest of the Mediterranean. There are also the Taulas, T-shaped stone formations which were created millennia ago for an unknown purpose.
One of the holdovers from the British period of rule is Minorcan Gin, a gin distilled from a juniper-based spirit. It’s popular and can be found all over the island, especially as Pomada, a mix of the gin with bitter lemon, and is drunk throughout the day by locals.
